George Ellis is a cosmologist and Professor emeritus of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. With Stephen Hawking he co-authored the seminal book The Large wScale Structure of Space-Time. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, London and the Royal Society of South Africa. In 2004, he won the Templeton Prize and in 1999, he was honored with the Order of the Star of South Africa by Nelson Mandela. He is currently a Visiting Fellow in the context of the CAS Research Focus “Cosmology”.

The invitation is jointly organized with MCMP and the Cluster of Excellence “Origins”.

The event is part of the CAS lecture series The Fine Tuned Universe.

The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU provides a forum for scientific exchange and discussion that bridges the divide between the established disciplines.
